Scotty Stevenson calls private school boys 'syrup suckers' in bizarre cricket commentary

Wednesday, 3 December 2025

Cricket commentator Scotty Stevenson prompted an awkward on air moment after referring to Christs College as the syrup suckers during cricket coverage. Mark Richardson asked him to explain leading Stevenson to clarify it was an old term not his own.

A TVNZ cricket commentator has called boys from a private Christchurch college “syrup suckers” in a strange interaction on live television.

“A bit of catching practice for the syrup suckers, the Christ’s College boys,” Scotty Stevenson said in TVNZ’s cricket commentary on Wednesday.

“Explain?” Mark Richardson responded.

“I didn't come up with a term,” Stevenson said. “It's just what others call them.

“It's howls of disapproval from the public school kids in the back of the commentary box. That's why you end up working for them.”

Then Richardson, in what appeared to be an effort to change the subject, said, “so for those who don't know that ground there, that's the Christ College cricket ground”.

“It's a little bit away from Christ’s College, which is on the far end of of Hagley Park, just on the other side of the road. Beautiful little pavilion they've got.”

He continued, “we're just assuming that's Christ’s College lads”.

But Stevenson wasn’t done there.

He said: “Well now we know for certain because they just tried to take down our drone, and that's the kind of behaviour one would expect from that mob.”
