Raniel Kiu, a 35-year-old patched Mongrel Mob member, died from massive blood loss following a violent clash in Palmerston North in 2023.

Kiu and four other gang members carrying firearms forced their way into a Dahlia Street flat at around 10pm, allegedly looking for methamphetamine.

A resident told police they stabbed Kiu in the legs while lying on the floor after a gun was pointed directly at them.

A patched gang member was fatally stabbed in self-defence in the legs after a group of armed men forced their way into a home.

A Coroners Court certificate of findings has confirmed no one is criminally liable for the death of Raniel Kiu, after a police review found the stabbing occurred entirely in self-defence. The written findings, issued by Coroner A H Steel, follow an official inquiry into the May 11, 2023, incident.

Kiu, 35, was a patched member of the Mongrel Mob and died in Palmerston North Hospital shortly before midnight following the confrontation at a property on Dahlia Street.

Police established that Kiu was in the company of four Mongrel Mob members when they used force to enter the flat at around 10pm. Members of the invading group carried firearms and allegedly were searching for methamphetamine. There were three occupants inside the house at the time.

A violent altercation broke out within the house, leaving significant quantities of Kiu's blood at multiple locations throughout the dwelling. An occupant told police he stabbed a man, later identified as Kiu, in response to a firearm being pointed directly at him. Police found the forensic evidence consistent with the occupant lying on the ground at the time he stabbed Kiu in the legs.

A subsequent legal review of the evidence supported the resident's account of self-defence. Police noted that their investigation was heavily challenged by a complete lack of cooperation from witnesses, and no one has been identified as criminally liable.

Emergency services were originally called to Dahlia Street at about 10:30pm following reports of a fight. Arriving officers found Kiu severely injured on the street, and he was transported to the hospital by ambulance.

Forensic pathologist Dr Amy Spark conducted a post-mortem examination and concluded that the cause of death was blood loss from penetrating sharp-force injuries to the lower limbs. Kiu sustained wounds to his right leg muscle, his left chest wall, and the muscle, major blood vessels, and nerve of his left leg.

Toxicological testing by the Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR) confirmed cannabis and a 1.2mg/L concentration of methamphetamine in Kiu's blood. Spark noted that while this level can overlap with fatal thresholds, the context of severe blood loss from major blood vessels indicated it reflected a recreational level, with death directly caused by the stab wounds.

Coroner Steel concluded the inquiry on the papers, evaluating documentary evidence instead of holding a public inquest.
