Car fire closes Transmission Gully northbound lanes

A car fire on State Highway 1 north of Wellington has prompted the closure of all northbound lanes.
The NZ Transport Agency the lanes on Transmission Gully, between the SH1/SH58 interchange at Pauatahanui and Mackays, were closed around 8.45am on Tuesday. Southbound lanes remained open.
Police said no injuries were reported.

Motorists travelling north were being diverted via State Highway 59 and were advised to expect delays.
Erica Moses said she believes she was among the first people to notice the vehicle in trouble before it burst into flames.
“My partner and I were on our way to work and we thought the smoke was fog,” she said.
“We got closer and saw there was a car with its hazards on. When we got even closer we saw a man jump out of the vehicle and jump over the fence on the gully and quickly putting his jacket on.”
Moses said she immediately called police as the smoke worsened.
“Once I got to work I opened my phone to go on Facebook just to see it had caught fire. I’m so glad I whipped out my phone and called for help when I did.”
