A Christchurch company has been awarded the tender to build the Invercargill Licensing Trust's new $40 million Langlands hotel.

Leighs Construction says they have nominated 12 southern subcontractors for the job.

The trust's restaurant, bar and hotel complex on the corner of Dee and Don streets is expected to open in October 2021.

Project manager Tess Browne says having 12 Invercargill-based subcontractors is a good result.

Leighs South Island operations manager Jeff Macdonald says at least 20 subcontractors will be required for the build.

'It's our first project in the deep south. This will be a high-class establishment on a busy site,' he says.

One challenge the hotel will face once it is built is the constant winds.

The building's design meets the 'extreme wind loading requirement,' Browne says.

ILT chief executive Chris Ramsay says Leighs were picked for the project after a 'meticulous procurement process'.

'Leighs has signalled key staff will be moving to the city for the duration of the project. They are ready to mobilise immediately and kick start construction which is fantastic from our perspective,' Ramsay says.
