A house in Bluff was extensively damaged on Tuesday night after a fire broke out.

Emergency services were called to the house on Bann St about 10.30pm.

A neighbour, who was alerted after hearing sirens, saw the glow of the fire through his window, before he watched the blaze break into the roof of the house.

It was “a pretty mean fire”, he said.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson said the house was well involved in fire when the Bluff Volunteer Fire Brigade arrived and two crews from Invercargill also attended.

The fire was contained to two or three rooms, which were all extensively damaged, the spokesperson said.

There were concerns that a person was inside the house, but no-one was found inside, the spokesperson said.

Another neighbour said he went outside to look at the fire and saw the occupant of the house run back in to get his dog.

Police were also called to control traffic, a police spokesperson said.

The fire was not believed to be suspicious, and an investigator will visit the site on Wednesday to determine how it started.
