MAS has been voted the Consumer NZ People's Choice for car insurance, four years in a row.

You worked hard for that set of wheels. It represents your freedom, mobility and impeccable work ethic. When it comes to insuring your car, you want peace of mind that everything is taken care of.

CHECK WHAT YOUR POLICY COVERS (AND DOESN'T)

Every policy is different depending on what car you own, how old it is, and how old you are.

First things first, decide between market value and agreed value. Market value means the insurer will pay the value of the vehicle based on the current market rate at the time of the accident, while agreed value means that you will come to an agreement about what your car is worth in its current state, and when you make a claim you'll receive that amount (minus annual depreciation).

MAS general manager (marketing and products) Mike Davy says while no one wants to have to make a claim on their car insurance, some policies make the experience a little easier.

'If you have comprehensive cover through MAS, we'll cover any travel or accommodation expenses up to $1000 if you can't drive your car. You can also pay a little extra to add a hire car benefit to your policy or windscreen repairs too.'

KNOW WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE AN ACCIDENT

Car accidents, even minor scrapes and bumps, are stressful and it's easy to get flustered. But remembering to do a few basics will make a big difference when it comes to making a claim.

Before you go on a road trip this summer make sure you get your car setup with car insurance for your peace of mind.

Exchange personal details (including the other driver's insurance company); if the other driver is uninsured, note down their licence plate number too. If there are witnesses, try to get their details as well. Finally, get in touch with your insurer as soon as you can. The sooner you sort out your car, the sooner you'll be back on the road again.

PREVENTION IS THE BEST MEDICINE

Insurance combined with prevention is the best policy. Before you go on a road trip this summer, check your tyres, oil and water. Sort out any windscreen damage and think about a service.

'If you have MAS contents insurance, your car's contents will be protected anywhere in New Zealand. Remember though: It's always a good idea to hide your valuables when you leave your car. Better yet, take them with you,' Davy says.

If you're towing a caravan or trailer, make sure your car is rated for the weight you're carrying. If you haven't towed anything for a while, take a drive around the neighbourhood before you hit the road for real.
