Tim Southee and his Black Caps bowlers face a big third day in Hamilton after South Africa took the upper hand in the second test.

A remarkable collapse from the home batters - and a five-wicket bag for spinner Dane Piedt - saw them all out for 211 in the first innings to trail the touring side by 31.

New Zealand lost 6-38 on a scarcely believable afternoon before No 10 Neil Wagner (33 off 27 balls) helped them stagger past 200.

The Black Caps - 1-0 up after a crushing first test win - need at least a draw in Hamilton to secure their first test series victory over the Proteas.

The Hamilton forecast for Thursday is again good - MetService predicts mainly fine with a maximum temperature of 27C.
