While Auckland is debating over four sites for a ‘national stadium’, Christchurch’s new 30,000-seat indoor stadium, Te Kaha, is taking shape.

Christchurch City Council has released the latest update showing a bird’s eye view of progress on Te Kaha, which is located in the block between Madras St, Hereford St, Barbadoes St and Tuam St in the central city, about 5 minutes walk from Cathedral Square.

The council said the project remains within budget and on track to open in April 2026, which will be about four years after it approved the project to proceed following public consultation as to whether a further $150 million should be invested, taking the total cost to $683 million.

The covered stadium will have 30,000 seat capacity for sports matches, made up of 25,000 permanent seats and a further 5000 temporary seats when required.

Capacity for concerts and other events will be about 36,000.

The stadium will be the new home of the Crusaders and is sure to attract big All Blacks tests, which have largely eluded Christchurch since the 2011 earthquake put an end to Lancaster Park.

In the April video update, project director Kent Summerfield provides an overview of how construction is progressing on site.

Ten of the 40 radial truss roof supports have now been installed in preparation for the roof work beginning in the coming months.

Significant progress has been made in the four-storey west stand, which houses player facilities, a function space for about 900 people, corporate boxes, coaches' and media facilities.
