Watch: Mohamed Salah parties in the street after Egypt’s historic win over New Zealand

Tuesday, 23 June 2026

Mohamed Salah partied in the street with jubilant fans after inspiring Egypt to their first-ever World Cup win.

The Liverpool great also danced in the team’s dressing room after his country came from behind to beat New Zealand and go top of Group G.

Footage posted on social media shows Egypt’s celebrations following their 3-1 triumph, in Vancouver, Canada.

Salah, who left Liverpool by mutual consent at the end of the season, was front and centre after scoring his country’s second goal and setting up their third.

In one clip he dances topless in the dressing room while his team-mates sing along to a track blaring from a smart speaker. In others, he is holding the speaker or is encircled by team-mates dancing around him.

The celebrations spilled into the streets, with Mo Salah at one point being hoisted onto the shoulders of other players to the delight of watching fans.

He said afterwards: “We just wanted to do our best in this tournament to make the people of Egypt happy, and I think they are happy right now and proud.

“The only thing I can promise them is that we will sweat, we will run and we will give it our best.”

He added: “What happened today is history for us as Egyptians. We see a lot of teams win games, but for us as Egyptians, it doesn’t happen often, first time in history.

“I am not selfish, but we have qualified twice in the last 30-40 years and I was lucky to play in those two and score in two tournaments.”

Salah played for Liverpool for nine seasons, winning two Premier League titles and becoming the leading foreign goalscorer in the competition’s history.

He had a dip in form last season and, amid tensions, announced his contract with the squad would be ended a year early.
