Highlanders land Moana Pasifika and Tongan test playmaker Patrick Pellegrini

The first five-eighth expressed the need to move on quickly ahead of Saturday's test against France.

All of a sudden, Josh Jacomb has some serious competition for the No. 10 jersey at the Highlanders.

Jamie Joseph’s Highlanders have landed Tongan test star and former Moana Pasifika first five-eighths Patrick Pellegrini.

The 27-year-old found himself on the lookout for a new club when the final curtain came down on Moana Pasifika’s short five-year Super Rugby history.

Moana Pasifika was first placed into liquidation back in May and then late last month, New Zealand Rugby decided against approving the transfer of Moana’s licence to any new party.

Pellegrini’s two-year deal comes after Jacomb, who has been playing for the Chiefs, committed to the Highlanders for the 2027 and 2028 Super Rugby Pacific seasons, back in October.

Pellegrini, who has played 12 tests for Tonga, joined Moana Pasifika in 2025 and has played 16 matches over the last two seasons.

Joseph said Pellegrini’s arrival in Dunedin is an important step in shaping the Highlanders squad for 2027.

“Patrick is a smart, composed No.10 who has proven himself in some of the toughest club competitions in the world.

“He’s grown his game significantly over the past few seasons and shown he can perform at international level. We believe he’ll thrive in our environment and add real value to the group,” Joseph said.

For Pellegrini, continuing his Super Rugby career at the Highlanders will be an exciting new challenge.

“It’s a real privilege to sign for such a great club and I can’t wait to get to work with the boys, meet the fans and make a contribution to the club's future success,” he said.

While Jacomb returns to Taranaki for the upcoming National Provincial Championship, Pellegrini has been confirmed for Otago’s campaign.

He will re-establish his combination with former Moana Pasifika team-mate, halfback Joel Lam, who has also signed on with Otago.
