Elijah Just’s volley up for FIFA World Cup goal of the tournament

All Whites midfielder Eli Just is among 12 players in the running for the FIFA World Cup's goal of the tournament award, alongside Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe.

Just's stunning opener in New Zealand's 2-2 draw with Iran has made the final shortlist, with the winner to be decided by a fan vote on FIFA's website.

The 26-year-old scored three goals during a breakout World Cup campaign, including both of the All Whites' goals against Iran.

His opening strike against Iran was the standout, as he flicked the ball up with his left foot before rifling a volley with his weaker right foot after excellent hold-up play from captain Chris Wood.

Eli Just announced himself on the world stage with three goals in three games but the All Whites ultimately fell short of their main objectives.

Just admitted afterwards he barely remembered scoring the spectacular goal, saying it all unfolded in an instant.

“It happened so quickly. I remember the ball going over my head and I tried to lift my arm because I didn't realise Woodsy was there,” Just said.

“He plays it to me and I don't remember exactly what happened. I thought I just volleyed it with my right foot, but when I watched it back I actually took a touch with my left. It was actually quite a nice goal – nicer than I thought at the time.”

Twelve goals are in contention for goal of the tournament, including Ferran Torres' extra-time winner for Spain in the World Cup final and Messi's curling strike into the top corner in Argentina's 3-0 win over Algeria.
