One-club man Alex Rufer commits future to Wellington Phoenix

Captain Alex Rufer has committed his future to the Wellington Phoenix, rejecting overseas interest to sign a two-year extension.

The All Whites midfielder was heavily linked with a move to Vietnam after coming off contract at the end of the 2025-26 season, but delayed his decision until after the World Cup before choosing to remain in Wellington and lead Chris Greenacre’s new era.

Rufer’s retention is a major boost for the Phoenix after the departures of top scorer Ifeanyi Eze and All Whites Tim Payne and Sarpreet Singh.

The 30-year-old has made 189 A-League appearances for Wellington since his debut in 2014 and is set to reach the 200-game milestone during the upcoming campaign.

Greenacre said he was delighted Rufer had committed to the club.

“I had a number of conversations with Alex and really put my heart on the line because I really wanted him to be part of this new era for the Phoenix,” he said.

“He, like me, understands where this club needs to get back to. He knows what the Phoenix means to the fans and people that have been around the club for a long time.

“So I’m really, really happy that he’s extended his contract.”

Rufer, who became a father last year, said staying close to home was a key factor in his decision and he was excited by Greenacre’s vision for the club.

The Phoenix finished eighth last season and have missed the finals in consecutive campaigns after reaching the heights of a second-place finish and semifinal appearance in 2023-24.

“Being comfortable and being happy off the field was a big reason why this all works,” Rufer said.

“And I’m really excited and looking forward to the next couple of years under Greeny.

“We’ve had some good conversations about the club moving forward and how he wants to play, and I feel like it’s my first season again. That’s exciting and I can’t wait to get started.”
