Meeting making a stand on gangs

Saturday, 17 November 2007

Make a stand against gang activity in Timaru, Maria Edwards is urging.

'I want to make huge pleas to all of South Canterbury to attend the meeting.

'It does not matter if you have not been personally affected by the gangs yet, someone you know or you could be in the future.

'We need to make a united stand and start the ball rolling to protect our children and young ones from these gangs and do something about it before some one gets killed.'

People did not have to have any solutions but just be prepared to start talking about what the community can do and show their support, she said.

'Some women from the RSA said they supported what I was doing but didn't know what they could do.

'Its all about bums on seats, the more support we get the better.'

She had the full support of Mrs Annear, and also Jane Cullimore from the Safer Communities Committee.

'Basically if the community does not show its support and something happens then we have only ourselves to blame.'
