Despite wild winds, one Air New Zealand pilot managed to pull off a smooth landing in the capital on Tuesday.

The stormy weather saw gusts of up to 105kmh at Wellington Airport and numerous flights were either diverted or cancelled due to the weather.

But at least one flight made it through, pulling off a smooth landing. A passenger on an Auckland to Wellington flight, arriving around 4pm, managed to capture the plane's wings wobbling as the pilot brought the plane into land.

Much of the country was battered by the weather yesterday. Flights and ferries were cancelled, motorists ducked for cover and a 'tornado' was even spotted at Lake Dunstan near Cromwell.

MetService warned Wellington would also be treated to more terrible weather on Wednesday, but meteorologist Lewis Ferris said it would not be quite the hammering the region received on Tuesday.

Wednesday's winds were predicted to reach 90kmh, while Tuesday's hit 140kmh.
