Driver's dangerous overtaking caught on camera

Monday, 13 August 2018

Dash cam footage shows a near miss on one of north Auckland's dangerous roads.

Kaylene Bassett didn't have time to toot as she swerved to the side of the road to avoid a head-on crash.

Bassett was driving south on State Highway 1 north of Rodney - from Mangawhai Road towards Te Hana - when the oncoming driver began overtaking while coming around a corner.

'They just about hit me and I had to swerve off the road. If I had been distracted for a second it could have been all over and a fatal accident.'

Dashcam footage shows the vehicle only metres away from Bassett.

Bassett was alone in the car and said this type of driving behaviour was common on this particular strip of road.

'There [are] a lot of accidents that happen on this road. People tend to blame the road, but it's the drivers.

'People need to slow down, I was coming off a passing lane and it's a 100 kilometre zone.'

Bassett went to police, but they were unable to see the registration number.

'I couldn't see the driver, I didn't even have time to toot. People don't need to rush, if it was five seconds earlier or later it could of been a life.

'People should pass with care, the person in the car would of only needed to wait another two or three minutes and there would of been a passing lane.'

Bassett suggested New Zealand Transport Agency should look at investing in double yellow lines on the strip to reduce accidents.

NZTA has been approached for comment.
