Oasis reunion rumours: Here’s what to know
Tuesday, 27 August 2024
With speculation there’s a reunion in the mix for Oasis on the 30th Anniversary of their debut album ‘Definitely Maybe’ here’s what you need to know.
Who are Oasis?
Oasis were formed in 1991 in Manchester in the UK, quickly becoming the figureheads of the Brit-pop craze of the 90’s. With hits like “Wonderwall” and “Don’t Look Back in Anger”, even if you don’t recognise them with your eyes, you will with your ears.
Like many bands before them, Oasis were eager for the rockstar life-style, knocking down hotel rooms, and brawling backstage.
They disbanded in 2009, following decades of conflict between two of the band's members, brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher.
Today, Oasis still amasses 21.6 Million monthly listeners on Spotify, maintaining their popularity leading up to the 30th anniversary of their debut album, ‘Definitely Maybe’.
What’s Happening?
On Monday the brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher posted identical videos on social media, with the same date and time, 27th August 2024, 8am.
A day prior, Liam Gallagher posted on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) “I never did like that word former.” A reply to the tweet asked for clarification to which Liam replied “You tell me man.”
The announcement is due take place at 8am UK time, 7pm NZT.
Internet users have been quick to speculate a reunion and new tour is on the menu.
Why did they split in the first place?
Nobody does sibling rivalry quite like Noel and Liam Gallagher. The brothers have had a very long winded, public and sometimes physical sibling rivalry.
For example, in 2000 Oasis were on a much anticipated world tour. In true Gallagher fashion, the brothers got into a fight so bad Noel quit (later rejoining). Liam had questioned the legitimacy of Noel’s daughter Anais. The Guardian reported that Noel was on top of Liam in an instant.
In 2005 Noel told Q magazine that Liam hadn’t apologised during the five years since.
'He's my brother. I hope he's reading this and realises that. He's my brother but he's at arm's length until he apologises for what he's done.'
In 2009, the almost-two-decades worth of public conflict between the siblings came to a head when Noel quit Oasis for good this time.
The Guardian reported that the band were set to play at the Rock en Seine festival in Paris on the day Noel quit, but just mere minutes before Oasis went on stage, the two brothers got involved in a fight.
In his statement, Noel said “people will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer. Apologies to all the people who bought tickets to the shows in Paris Konstanz and Milan.”
While Noel has quit the band and returned twice before, this was the first time Noel left officially.
A year later in 2010, the band split for good. Liam accepted Oasis’ last honour, the Brit Award for best album of the past 30 years. Liam thanked his band mates, and his fans, but notably left his brother Noel out.
Liam later explained in an interview that he’s “sick of it all being about me and Noel,”
“The last couple of months has pretty much been all about me and him so I thought it was only right to mention the other lads who played on the album and the best fans in the world.”
The pair still argue on social media sporadically, and haven’t publicly reconciled. So to put it plainly, fans are confused but excited.
What can we expect?
Well, nothing is concrete at this point. But if you’re a Oasis fan, keep your eyes and ears peeled tonight for the announcement at around 7pm NZT.
