Watch: Kamala Harris left laughing after bizarre Trump claim about 'eating the pets'

Wednesday, 11 September 2024

US Vice President Kamala Harris was left laughing, then frowning, then shaking her head as former President Donald Trump started accusing immigrants of stealing and eating pets.

It was a bizarre claim which the ABC moderators immediately fact checked in the presidential election debate. Trump claimed that high immigration had ruined the US, and claimed that pets in Springfield, Ohio were being eaten as a result.

'They're eating the dogs, they're eating the cats, they're eating the pets,' Trump said.

Perhaps expecting Trump to make these claims, ABC moderator David Muir said the news station had already asked Springfield officials if pets had gone missing.

In a statement, the officials said there had been no reports of pets being eaten or harmed by immigrants in the area.

Trump said he'd seen it on TV, and stood by his claim.

Harris said his 'extreme' claims showed why long time Republicans had come out in support of her. She said he was unfit to be president.

The pet claims have been repeated by both Trump and his running mate JD Vance in recent weeks, despite the claims being proven as misinformation.
