An old email has surfaced of Prince Andrew telling the late Jeffrey Epstein “we are in this together” after a picture of the prince with his arm around then teenager Virginia Giuffre was published in 2011.

The 2011 email, published in the Mail on Sunday and The Sun on Sunday, contradicts what the royal told BBC Newsnight in 2019, that he had ceased contact with Epstein.

The bombshell BBC interview led to huge public backlash against the prince which saw him stepping down as a working royal.

'I'm just as concerned for you! Don't worry about me! It would seem we are in this together and will have to rise above it. Otherwise keep in close touch and we'll play some more soon!!!!' Prince Andrew penned to Epstein.

The email, according to The Sun and The Mail on Sunday, is reported to be from February 2011, the day after the well-known photograph of Prince Andrew, Giuffre and Ghislaine Maxwell was made public.

'I'm just as concerned for you! Don't worry about me! It would seem we are in this together and will have to rise above it. Otherwise keep in close touch and we'll play some more soon!!!!' he wrote.

He reportedly signed off with: 'A, HRH The Duke of York, KG.'

Epstein, who was facing a raft of charges, was found dead in his lower Manhattan jail cell in 2019
