Watch: ‘Leave Greenland alone’ - heckler interrupts US anthem at NBA game in London
Monday, 19 January 2026
A heckler interrupted the US national anthem during an NBA game in London, shouting “leave Greenland alone” as the song was being performed at the O2 Arena.
The moment drew loud cheers and applause from the crowd as singer and actress Vanessa Williams continued singing The Star-Spangled Banner ahead of Sunday’s (local time) game between the Orlando Magic and Memphis Grizzlies.
Footage of the interruption quickly spread online, with the shout clearly audible inside the arena.
One video posted to social media showed spectators reacting positively, with clapping and cheering heard immediately after the comment was made.
The protest came against the backdrop of rising political tension between the United States and several allies over US President Donald Trump’s renewed comments about acquiring Greenland.
Trump has said he wants the autonomous Danish territory for US “national security” reasons and has threatened tariffs against countries that oppose the move.
The United Kingdom, alongside seven other Nato allies, recently issued a joint statement backing Denmark and criticising Trump’s stance.
“As members of Nato, we are committed to strengthening Arctic security as a shared transatlantic interest,” the statement said.
“Tariff threats undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous downward spiral.”
The NBA’s return to London marked its first game in the city since 2019 and formed part of a European tour that also included a stop in Berlin earlier in the week.
The London fixture drew a high-profile crowd, including several Premier League footballers and other sporting figures.
