Thursday, 25 June 2026

Two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela within about a minute of each other on Wednesday (local time), causing buildings to collapse and damage in Caracas.

The rare back-to-back tremors, measuring magnitudes 7.1 and 7.5, rank among the strongest earthquakes to hit the country in more than a century.

The quakes, which struck shortly after 6pm local time, could be felt in several states. Homes and buildings collapsed in the capital Caracas. A high death toll is expected.

Footage and images from Caracas and other affected areas are expected to emerge as the extent of the damage becomes clear.
