The internet did what the internet does best after Robbie Williams appeared to drop a mysterious white substance onto a microphone during a live World Cup broadcast.

Within hours, clips of the British pop star’s awkward on-air moment had racked up hundreds of thousands of views, with social media sleuths wildly speculating about what had fallen from his face.

The answer?

A breath mint.

Williams, 52, leaned straight into the rumours, posting a tongue-in-cheek video from bed.

“I’d just like to apologise for the object that fell onto the microphone yesterday,” he said with a straight face.

“It was deeply unprofessional, and people worried about me.”

He then stuck out his tongue to reveal two breath mints.

“But it’s OK,” he quipped. “Because I had several more.”

He captioned the clip: “Just woke up and feeling… Mint.”

The original clip, filmed during a television interview at the FIFA World Cup final, showed a small white object dropping onto the top of his microphone before Williams casually picked it up and carried on talking.

Online detectives quickly leapt to conclusions, with some insisting it had fallen from his nose and speculating it was drugs.

Fans, however, loved Williams’ response.

“Knew you’d have a brilliant comeback for this,” one person wrote.

Another added: “All the people saying it was something else… Love that you’ve recorded this.”

Williams has long been open about his past struggles with drugs and alcohol during the height of his fame with Take That and as a solo artist. He has been sober for many years and has frequently spoken about his recovery.

The viral moment came after Williams performed during the World Cup final entertainment, where Spain defeated Argentina to lift the trophy.
