Alliance Group and Dawn Meats make it official
Monday, 1 December 2025
Founded in 1948 by Southland Farmers, Alliance Group has been New Zealand's only 100% farmer-owned red meat co-operative for many years. But from today, it officially accommodates its first majority shareholder - Ireland’s Dawn Meats.
The transaction of bringing Dawn Meats into the Alliance fold is officially complete, after substantial negotiations and a shareholder vote. Alliance had sold the transaction to its shareholders as the best path forward to recapitalise the business, reduce debt and fund investment in technology and efficiency, after generating significant debt and losses in recent years.
Today marked an “essential milestone” for the company, said chief executive Willie Wiese.
“We can [now] move from planning to implementation with a partner that brings scale, global reach and expertise that clearly creates a competitive advantage,” he said this afternoon.

“This marks the start of an exciting new chapter for Alliance, one that is centred on value creation for our farmer-shareholders.”
With the transaction now settled, about $270 million is pocketed by the New Zealand company. But $188m will go to paying down debt while a further $20m will be invested into the company to fund growth.
Then, Alliance’s 4500 farmer-shareholders will receive about $20m in proceeds from the sale in the current financial year, and a further $20m in the 2026/2027 financial year.
And finally, up to $26m will be poured into the new Alliance Investment Co-operative, following a stronger-than- forecast year-end result for Alliance.
Niall Browne, chief executive of Dawn Meats, said his company was pleased the formal process of acquiring a 65% shareholding in Alliance was completed, saying it would create “exciting opportunities” for both companies and their farmer-suppliers in New Zealand, Ireland and the UK.
“This investment expands our business significantly and positions us, our UK company Dunbia and Alliance Group as a unified and dynamic industry competitor with a substantial presence and customer base in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres.
“We are intent on ensuring we can maximise our new combined strength to provide existing and new customers with a year-round supply of sustainable and world class, grass-fed red meat.”
