Frank Kitts underground car park to reopen
Thursday, 29 August 2024
The underground car park at Frank Kitts Park will reopen later this year.
The 97-space car park was closed in 2020 when an earthquake assessment concluded it was earthquake-prone and councillors once considered whether to demolish it in 2021. Before it closed, the car park housed the Wellington Underground market on Saturdays.
The council’s Wellington Waterfront manager Shane Binnie said the car park could be reopened again, under guidance developed by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) since the car park closed.
“We’ve taken a similar approach for other council-owned buildings including the Michael Fowler Centre and the Opera House.”
The council expected it would take four months to make the car park operational again.
