Man arrested, young man on life support after alleged assault on Courtenay Place

A 21-year-old man is on life support after an alleged assault on Courtenay Place outside the old Reading Cinema.

Now, police are appealing for two women who they believe were sitting nearby at the time of the alleged assault to come forward.

The young man was taken to Wellington Hospital with critical injuries after police were called to the hospitality hotspot at 3.20am on Sunday.

The Post understands he suffered a serious head injury and is due to undergo further tests today.

A 29-year-old man has since been arrested in relation to the incident, and charged with wounding with reckless disregard for the safety of the victim. He appeared in Wellington District Court on Monday.

Judge Andy Nicholls granted him bail and suppressed his name. The defendant is due back in court in two weeks.

Police ask that anyone with with any information about the assault come forward.

“In particular, we want to speak to two women who were sitting close by when the incident occurred, and who would have witnessed what happened,” a spokesperson said.
