The Johnsonville Rail Line has been reopened after a slip was cleared from the line, with the first Metlink service running at 2.30pm.

The line was closed this morning and all train services bus replaced after a Metlink passenger train bound for Johnsonville nudged the slip that had fallen beside track between Wadestown and Crofton Downs at approximately 8.30am.

There were no injuries to five passengers and three staff on board at the time.

The driver stopped the train and all onboard were taken to Ngaio train station in order to take buses to finish their journeys.

The train was not derailed and appears undamaged but is due to be inspected by engineers at the depot.

MetService meterologist Clare O’Connor said 70.2mm of rain fell in the 24 hour period between 9am Sunday and 9am Monday at the Kelburn Station.

That was the fifth wettest 24 hour period recorded in October since 1927.

The heaviest period fell between 2am and 3am.

Wellington City Council has confirmed that there were no other weather-related issues from the heavy rain that fell overnight on Sunday.
