Nikau Cafe shuts its central Wellington doors after 25 years

Wellington’s Nikau Cafe will be moving from its long-time inner-city location, as construction in Civic Square hit its business.

The cafe will be closing its doors on Monday December 16, “The Nikau team” said on Wednesday.

The café, which is next to the City Gallery and near the City to Sea bridge, has had its business affected by the ongoing construction in Civic Square, they said.

Its building was also due for earthquake strengthening in February, adding to the decision to close.

However, the owners were “actively exploring future options” for the cafe, looking for a site that was “befitting Nikau Café’s iconic status”.

“While several potential sites have been considered, none have yet met the unique requirements to ensure our continued success.

“Please know that our search is ongoing, and we remain hopeful that Nikau Café will find a new home to continue serving Wellingtonians as the beloved icon it has become.”

Previously, owner John Fiso said the ongoing construction had made the restaurant’s business drop by two thirds.

Fiso took over the cafe in 2018 after its previous owners left to run Rita on Aro St.

The cafe was established in 1998, and was named for the Nikau palm statues that adorned the entrance way to Wellington Central Library.

Nikau Cafe was known for its rooftop garden, where the cafe grew its owns herbs and seasonal veges.
