The Government is consulting on increasing the speed limit on State Highway 1 at Transmission Gully to 110kph.

The proposed speed limit change also covered the Raumati Straights, the stretch of road connecting Transmission Gully and the Kāpiti Expressway. About 22,000 vehicles use the road each day.

Transport Minister Chris Bishop said the change was part of the agenda to reduce travel times and increase the productivity of our transport network.

“Transmission Gully was designed and constructed to a high safety standard. This is reflected in the low crash numbers on the road since opening in 2022,” he said.

“It has safety features that greatly reduce the risk of death or serious injury in a crash, like two lanes in each direction, and flexible median barrier between opposing lanes. Since opening, there have been over 150 barrier strikes but no deaths.”

Motorists have been able to drive 110kph on the Kāpiti Expressway since last November, between north of the Poplar Avenue at Raumati interchange to south of the Ōtaki northern interchange.

The consultation by Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) will run for six weeks.

“Boosting economic growth and productivity is a key part of the Government’s plan to rebuild the economy and this proposal supports that outcome by reducing travel times and increasing efficiency on this vital route between Wellington and the lower and central North Island,” Bishop said.
