Ed Sheeran to play Wellington concert in January
Tuesday, 22 July 2025
Music megastar Ed Sheeran will perform a brand new show in Wellington - the singer’s self-proclaimed favourite city in the world - next January.
The Sky Stadium show, which is part of his Loop Tour, is scheduled for Wednesday January 21. Sheeran will also perform in Auckland and Christchurch - the latter the artist’s first show in the city for over a decade - before heading across the Tasman.
Sky Stadium chief executive Warrick Dent said the venue was excited to be one of the first stadiums in the world to host the singer’s latest show.
“The last time he played Sky Stadium was an incredible experience and a record breaker for us in terms of attendance, and we look forward to what will no doubt be a spectacular show as he kicks off his new tour.”
His fans, known as Sheerios, went wild when the singer performed in Wellington to the 48,000 fans - and one talented little girl - who showed up to pack the venue to the gills.
WellingtonNZ chief executive Mark Oldershaw added he couldn’t wait to welcome Sheeran back to Wellington, as the singer was a “world-class artist”.
“His music resonates with people of all ages, and his concerts create unforgettable experiences for fans and families alike.
“We know he is a big fan of our city, so we’ll certainly be rolling out the welcome mat for his return.”
Concerts like Sheeran’s bought a real buzz to Wellington, Oldershaw said, in addition to the support given to local businesses.
The Sheeran event would showcase the best of what Wellington had to offer, Oldershaw said, expecting tickets would sell fast given Sheeran’s strong fanbase.
But there’s been a gap since the last big concert held at the stadium which was the Foo Fighters in January 2024.
Wellington has missed out on two recently announced tours.
Lorde will perform just two New Zealand shows - in Auckland and Christchurch - in February.
Lewis Capaldi is also heading to Auckland and Christchurch later this year on his world tour, ditching a Wellington stop that had been originally planned before his previous tour was cancelled.
Sheeran’s Loop Tour will follow the release of his latest album, Play, in September. The album has been called a new chapter for the artist, said to be an expansive, explorative and technicolour pop-music feat.
Singles Azizam, Sapphire, and Old Phone are included on the album, with the singer saying he was inspired by the musical cultures of India and Persia and their similarity to Irish folk music.
The singer-songwriter first reached global charts in 2011 and has sold nearly 200 million records worldwide.
Apple Music called Sheeran’s 2017 single, Shape Of You, the most streamed song of the last decade, and the artist was recently celebrated as a 12-time member of Spotify’s Billions Club.
Tickets for the January show will go on sale to the general public on Tuesday July 29 at 1pm, and will be available via Ticketek.
