Police have arrested and charged a person following an altercation near the Israeli embassy in Wellington on Wednesday.

A person was seen lying on the ground on Brandon St, in front of a building which houses Israel’s embassy, about 1pm on Wednesday. Protesters against Israel’s military operation in Gaza had been holding a regular demonstration nearby.

A police spokesperson said officers responded to reports of disorder and a 33-year-old woman was taken into custody relating to disorderly behaviour.

“She was charged with matters relating to an existing breach of her bail conditions.”

Brandon St has been the scene of numerous protests since Israel’s war in Gaza began in 2023, following the October 7 attack by Hamas, with demands for New Zealand to sanction Israel, recognise Palestine as a state and expel Israel’s ambassador.
