In pictures: The damage wrought by the wild Wellington weather
Monday, 20 April 2026
A state of emergency has been declared for Wellington region as more rain threatens an already damaged area.
MetService has upgraded the heavy rain warning for the Wellington region from orange to red. The latest weather warnings issued at 2pm forecast 100mm to 150mm of rainfall about the eastern hills and Hutt Valley.
Emergency officials are advising people in low-lying or flood-prone areas to move elsewhere for 24 hours and Metlink is advising people using rail and bus services to act early, head home, or stay home.
Our visual journalists Robert Kitchin and David Unwin have been surveying the damage on Monday and also on Sunday.
