New Editorial Leadership Team to guide Post’s daily leaders
Friday, 26 June 2026
Incoming editor-in-chief Matthew Hooton has established an Editorial Leadership Team to guide The Post’s daily leaders on the issues that matter to New Zealand and New Zealanders.
From Monday, The Post will publish a daily leader in print and online that will express what the team believes would be The Post’s position based on the 161-year heritage, current realities and the challenges New Zealand face today.
“The Post belongs to its readers - past, present and future - and it is and must remain bigger than any individual,” Hooton said.
“Members of the Editorial Leadership Team won’t so much be asking ourselves ‘what do I think about this issue?’. Each of us will be asking ‘what would The Post think about this issue?’.
”Editorials will cover public policy, politics, business, economics, the arts, sport and other issues important to readers and the wider community.“
Hooton will chair the team along with associate editor Luke Malpass and national affairs editor Andrea Vance. Its full membership includes chief arts correspondent André Chumko, political editor Henry Cooke, Auckland business editor Dita De Boni, assistant editor Kelly Dennett, chief sport news director Mark Geenty, chief Wellington news director Marc Greenhill and Auckland editor Amelia Wade.
Other experts from The Post will contribute as required on specialised topics.
“This is an eclectic group that won’t often agree on much in the first instance, just like our readers and their families,” Hooton said.
“But the plan is that together we’ll uphold the integrity and give expression to the heritage and values of The Post.”
Hooton will have ultimate responsibility for ensuring each editorial meets these tests.
The Post will be transparent when a consensus position cannot be achieved.
“On rare occasions, some members of the Editorial Leadership Team - including me - may feel so strongly about an issue that they wish to disassociate themselves from the consensus Post position, and that will be clearly flagged to readers.”
The first editorial from the team will be published on Monday.
