The search is on for a new secretary for the education ministry, as the current secretary Iona Holsted’s term comes to an end in December.

Education Minister Erica Stanford on Friday afternoon thanked Holsted “for her leadership during a period of change”, saying Holsted would conclude her tenure at the appointment of a new secretary.

“She has continued to display an unwavering dedication and passion for education while she has supported me in my first term as minister.”

Holsted started in the role in 2016 and was reappointed in 2021, until December 5, 2024.

“I acknowledge Iona’s distinguished public service to New Zealand and the significant contribution she has made to our education system,” Stanford said.

Holsted said it had been a privilege to have served for eight years “and now that my fixed term is coming to an end it is my intention to support a smooth transition for the incoming Secretary for Education”.

“Meanwhile, I look forward to continuing our work with ministers and the sector on delivering the Government’s education priorities.”

The Public Service Commission said a publicly advertised recruitment process will start shortly.
