Hobson’s Pledge leader Don Brash has filed a defamation claim against prominent political commentator Matthew Hooton, according to Brash.
Brash said in a press release he had filed a claim with the High Court at Auckland “after several attempts to resolve the matter privately”.
He has hired defamation specialist lawyers Peter McKnight and Ali Romanos.
Hooton, in response to The Post, said Brash’s statement “gives a partial version of events”.
“My lawyers were set to respond to the latest letter from Brash’s lawyer, Stephen Franks, in the next two days. They will now review the statement of claim, which has not yet been served, and respond to that in the proper manner, via the courts, in due course.”
Two weeks ago Hooton posted a public apology to Brash, in regards to comments made four weeks earlier on The Working Group podcast.
The apology was also read out on the podcast.
“I do not agree with Dr Brash’s position on the Treaty and related matters. My remarks came as part of a vigorous debate on a subject that I am particularly passionate about – as are many New Zealanders, including Dr Brash,” it said.
“But I accept I was not justified in making – and sincerely apologise for – those particular statements, which I unreservedly retract.”
Hooton has a long history with Brash and was a key backer in his successful challenge for the National Party leadership in 2003.
