Monday, 8 December 2025
The National Party has gained support in the latest political poll, suggesting the party can to return to power with help from its friends.
The 1News Verian Poll had National up 2% to 36%, while Labour is up 3% to 35%. The Green Party dropped to 7%, NZ First is on 8%, ACT is on 10% and Te Pāti Māori, who has made the headlines for its internal division in the party, has dropped 2% down to 1%.
Translated to seats, it would give National (44), NZ First (11) and ACT (12). The coalition Government would secure 67 seats, well over the number needed to return to power, compared to Labour (43), the Green Party (9) and Te Pāti Māori (6), assuming the party holds its electorate seats, combining for just 58 seats.
The TVNZ poll comes fresh off announcements such as a new National Party KiwiSaver policy, with pledges to further increase the default contribution if re-elected, as well as a policy announcement to cap local government rates.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon remains the most preferred PM, with 23%, while Labour leader Chris Hipkins sits at 21%.
Hipkins 3% up after a recent capital gains tax policy announcement, while Luxon is up 2% amid rumours of a failed coup from National MP Chris Bishop, who sits at 2%.
New Zealand First leader Winston Peters sits at 9%, while ACT leader David Seymour and Green co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick both sit at 5%.
The party vote polling showed:
Labour: 35% (+3)
National: 36% (+2)
Greens: 7% (-4)
NZ First: 9% (-4)
