Wednesday, 3 June 2026
The police are treating a fire at Prime Minister Christopher Luxon’s electorate office as suspicious.
A spokesperson for the prime minister said all staff were safe and unharmed following the fire.
“There was a fire at the office. Our staff are safe and were not harmed. It is now a police matter, so we do not have further comment at this stage,” the spokesperson said.
Police have been seen establishing a cordon around the office.
Detective Inspector Karen Bright said the police were investigating the fire as “suspicious”.
“At around 9.53am emergency services responded to reports of a small fire at the rear of an electoral office on Millhouse Drive, Northpark,” Bright said.
“The fire was extinguished quickly by Fire and Emergency New Zealand. A cordon has been established with a scene examination to take place.
“We are treating the circumstances as suspicious, and investigations will be ongoing.”
A nearby pharmacist told RNZ he had heard a loud bang earlier this morning.
Luxon is in Christchurch today.
