8 things Bree Peters must have
Sunday, 24 March 2024
“I like what I like but it changes all the time,” says Bree Peters. “All my friends have great taste and I am lucky that they recommend things to me. I lived with an interior designer for four years which blew my little mind. If you love something, share it, I say.”
The actor, known for her roles in Home and Away, Go Girls, The Brokenwood Mysteries, Baby Done and Shortland Street (as Dr Pania Stevens), is set to star in the upcoming dark comedy Spinal Destination as Tessa Rivers, a journalist who finds herself paralyzed from the waist down after contracting a mysterious illness. Created by Paula Whetu Jones, the series is loosely based on Whetu Jones’ own experiences in Burwood Spinal Unit.
Off screen and in real life, Peters likes to support locally made and small businesses – with a focus on vintage. Her last purchase was a pair of second-hand jeans from Find Love Share (“[owner] Kim has such wonderful affordable things”), with another recent steal a Les Mis sweatshirt found at Auckland’s popular Central Flea Market.
“ I don’t like online shopping too much unless I get recommended something or it’s tried and tested,” she says of her shopping habits. “Second-hand and thrifting are mostly how I shop for clothes and things these days. Mostly. I feel less poop about myself as a consumer that way, I make better less impulsive choices and frankly, it can be way cheaper.”
TAV swimsuit, $195
TAV makes the most amazing clothes. Polynesian patterns, hand printed, dip dyed and unique. I saw this in a pop-up store over summer but they also have an online store.
Amma by Saraid de Silva, $38
I have pre-ordered Saraid’s new novel from Unity Books and can’t wait. I know it’s going to be amazing. I know I am going to turn my phone off and not come up for air until I finish it.
The Bonzer, POA
On my wishlist… Griffin Surfboards shapes out of Mt Maunganui. Jordan makes custom boards too and they are wicked. Friends who are far better surfers than me love them! I’m saving my pennies for one of my own and borrowing theirs in the meantime.
Essential oils, $15 each, from Crushes
Cinnamon Bark and Pink Grapefruit – amazing in an oil burner or mixed with coconut oil. I use them as a perfume.
Hanna Court Hue Gourd lamp, POA
Hannah Court makes the most amazing one-of-a-kind Hue Gourd lamps. I bought one last year and it makes me so happy when it lights up my room at night. She lives in the Hokianga and you can order online.
Everblue Epsom salts, $3.50
I get sore muscles and I swear by a foot soak– or, if you are lucky enough to have a bath, laying in a few spoonfuls of this helps heaps. Everblue is $3.50 a bag and NZ made.
Māori Made Easy, $40, and Māori Made Easy Workbook 1, $25, by Scotty Morrison
I enrolled in te reo Māori course this year which is pretty massive for me. Scary but big in the very best way. These books are so helpful, accessible and like the cover says EASY. I like having mahi to do alongside my course work so the reo really sticks.
Madly Deeply by Alan Rickman, $60
This is Alan Rickman’s personal diaries from 1993 to 2016 when he passed. I loved it so much I bought it for someone for Christmas.
