A crane on the corner of Gloucester and Colombo streets lingered like a giant pendulum as it hoisted purlins and portal frames to help Christchurch’s new Court Theatre take shape.

High winds on Tuesday hampered the work, but the Christchurch City Council vertical capital delivery head Darren Moses said people would have seen “further progress” in the following days.

The level two concrete floor has also been poured for the new Court Theatre building that will house two theatres capable of seating more than 500 punters.

Along with the wooden beams, the level two concrete floor has also been poured, tying together the studio theatre’s pre-cast concrete panels and allowing a start on the timber frames.

Work on the foundations began in March.

The three-storey building will have a 375-seat playhouse theatre, a 130-seat theatre, an education studio and multi-purpose spaces.

Moses said the Christchurch City Council and the Court Theatre were “delighted with progress and look forward to seeing more of the building take shape over the coming months”.
