NZ singer Lou’ana’s favourite witchy obsessions

Saturday, 14 March 2026

Lou
Lou'ana.

Lou’ana (aka Lou’ana Whitney Pereira) is a jazz-trained Kiwi vocalist weaving witchy spirituality through her sultry soul and disco-infused tunes. Magic is a guiding force for the singer. Her debut single Eye To Eye introduced her as a modern mystic, conjuring spells with a crystal ball. That same mysticism courses through her sophomore album, Disco Witch – a shimmering fusion of nu-disco, soul and funk – which she’s now touring across the motu. She runs us through her favourite things.

TV show?

Anything magical and that has witchy vibes! From Charmed to Sabrina. And I will binge it, so I’m very careful when I watch a show that I have the time because I will be obsessed.

Sandwich filling?

Melted cheese. Yum.

Song?

This changes depending on my mood or the energy I want to cultivate. A song that will always pull me to the dance floor is Off the Wall by Michael Jackson. Another go-to for me is Golden by Zella Day. Otherwise I just listen to a four-hour sound bowl YouTube video music for soothing the nervous system.

Thing to buy at the supermarket?

Havana coffee – the pink one! Yum. We get a seasonal vege box delivered so I love being creative with the surprise box and get the necessities from the supermarket, like coffee!

Book?

The Joyous Body by Dr Clarissa Pinkola Estés, or any of her books. I love her writing.

Piece of art?

My uncle painted me an art piece for my 10th birthday, and I have taken it with me everywhere and it lives on my wall now. It's an abstract cosmic sky with a little star constellation. I have always loved moon and star gazing and looking and pondering upon the cosmos, so it’s a special piece to me.

Item of clothing?

I have so many amazing pieces – some vintage and some custom-made by incredible Aotearoa designer Brooke Tyson. If I had to choose one custom-make, my purple beaded set, skirt top and hood! And a vintage piece would be my Janis Joplin Penny Lane 70s suede fluffy jacket.

Podcast?

I have so many! Know Thyself and The Diary of a CEO. I love inspiring, insightful chats, anything thought-provoking that teaches me about how to evolve and grow as a person. At golden hour, the sun pours into my kitchen and out my window. I see rolling mountains and trees. I will put my headphones on, put on a podcast and cook dinner. I love these moments.

Movie?

The Harry Potter movies. I have rewatched them so many times. Another classic I love is Practical Magic, so I'm very excited for the second one to come out this year.

Smell/fragrance?

I have this protection spray, essential oil blend that I keep in my hand bag. I love that fragrance, it feels so grounding to me.

Destination?

Home.

Word?

“Groove unleash me, unleash me right.” The mantra of the album!

Bit of advice you've received?

Worrying is a habit.

Weekend ritual?

I gig every weekend so my rituals are mostly during the week. I have my daily morning rituals of journalling, movement and meditation which keeps me grounded. On the weekend I will be more flexible with my morning rituals, as I can sometimes be out of town and away from my space. So it’s important for me to have my rituals for the week so they cover me on the weekend.

Who is your favourite person?

My partner! My best friend for over a decade!

What has been your favourite job?

I love my job, I get to create music with my friends and bring joy to people’s gatherings.

Lou’ana is on tour with her new live show. Catch her at Hollywood Avondale in Auckland, March 20; Space Academy in Christchurch, March 21; and CubaDupa in Wellington, March 28. More info at louana.co.nz
