Student numbers at the University of Canterbury (UC) have set a record for the second year running.

The university enrolled 22,205 students this year, an all-time high and 5% more than last year.

The enrolment numbers, released on Friday, show the university is on track to exceed 24,000 students by the end of the year.

Enrolments by Canterbury school leavers at the university are up 11%, and many students have come from around the country.

Māori student numbers are up 9% in a year to 2180, with Pasifika numbers up 11%.

About 1550 international students are enrolled, up 12% from last year.

Assistant vice-chancellor of engagement Brett Berquist said the boost in student numbers reflected “Christchurch’s appeal as a modern, vibrant city that offers an affordable lifestyle for students and a strong student experience”.

Enrolment numbers are up at Lincoln University near Christchurch.

“We’re proud of UC’s role in attracting and retaining talent to study and work in our region.”

At Ara Institute in Christchurch, the number of full-time equivalent students is up 5.9% from last year.

Lincoln University is also seeing strong enrolments. Deputy vice-chancellor of student life Damian Lodge said the number had “shot up” for the fifth year running, and the halls of residence were full.

Meanwhile, Otago University is facing a financial deficit of between $3 million and $5m after a drop in student numbers.

The university has enrolled 19,656 students this year, down from 20,002 last year.
