New office and retail buildings worth $80 million are planned for the Five Mile shopping centre in Queenstown.

Commercial property company Queenstown Gateway (5M) Ltd wants to put up two new buildings at the shopping centre, which is on Grants Rd, Frankton, near Queenstown Airport.

It has applied to the district council for resource consent for the project.

Five Mile already has more than 60 retail, office and hospitality tenants.

The plan is for a 7800m² six-storey building, Murchison Tower, with five office floors and shops on the ground floor. Tenants are being sought for the building now.

Behind the existing Woolworths supermarket would be a new three-storey parking building, with pedestrian links to Murchison Tower.

Queenstown Gateway (5M) director Craig Greenwood said demand for office and retail space is strong, with Five Mile seen as the place to do business.

The company owns 2 hectares of land at Five Mile, with buildings housing businesses including The Warehouse, Noel Leeming, and Craigs Investment Partners.

“The rate of change in growth in the Queenstown and Southern Lakes district is linear each year,” says Craig.

“This district has experienced extraordinary levels of population and business growth.

“There was absolutely nothing at Five Mile before the first sod was turned in October 2013 and the supermarket opened two years later.”

Construction is planned to start in late 2026, with both buildings expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
