Cash register the booty of violent robbery at Christchurch sex shop, security guard stationed at entry

Police are appealing for information after an aggravated robbery Weirdos Adult Store at a Main South Road store around 7.30pm, where four masked offenders stole items and fled in a stolen vehicle.

A cash register was the booty of a violent robbery at a Christchurch adult store.

Two women were working at Hornby’s Weirdos Adult Store on Friday evening when four mask-clad people entered about 7.30pm.

One offender assaulted one of the women, breaking her arm, before the group stole the cash register.

Police believe the thieves left in a stolen Toyota Rav 4, which was found abandoned on Ellesmere Rd in Lincoln. Police are still looking for them.

A staff member at the store on Monday, Kelly, told The Press the assaulted woman had since been discharged from hospital and would have time off to recover. The other was also off work.

Kelly said the staff members said the robbers’ voices sounded youthful.

Midnight ram-raid at Chemist Warehouse

Police are investigating two other burglaries of commercial properties over the weekend - one on Blighs Rd at 7.35pm on Saturday, and another at the Chemist Warehouse at Westfield Riccarton about 12.40am on Monday.

The burglars used a stolen vehicle to crash through the front door of the Chemist Warehouse before stealing items and fleeing in a second vehicle, police said.

The burglars were still at large, but police were making inquiries, a spokesperson said.

‘Just naughty kids’

Weirdos has been based at the intersection of Main South and Shands roads in the heart of Hornby for about 25 years, Kelly said. It had never been robbed before.

“They only took the cashier’s draw,” Kelly said.

“It’s just naughty kids. My colleague said it’s cowardice.

“It’s shocking. The boss is hiring a security guy outside the shop now.”

The store sells an array of sex products and collectables in store. It sells vapes, legal party pills and “smoking herbs”, but they were only sold via the website to prevent thieves from targeting the store, Kelly said.

Neighbouring business owners, staff, and the public had dropped in to check in and provide support, Kelly said.

“Lots of neighbours and everyone have come to say hello, very nice neighbours.”

Police urged anyone with information about the Weirdos robbery, the offenders, or who was in the area between 7pm and 8pm and had dashcam or CCTV footage, to come forward.
