ED expansion completed
The expansion of Nelson Hospital’s emergency department has been completed. Health Minister Simeon Brown announced the completion of the $10.6 million upgrade on Tuesday. The work took 18 months to complete and increased treatment spaces from 23 to 29. The expansion also improved triage areas, added dedicated mental health rooms and introduced three new “fast-track assessment zones”, Brown said in a statement. “Three new fast-track areas will also help ensure patients with less complex needs are seen sooner, freeing up capacity for those requiring more urgent care. The final stage of the project involved a refurbished reception and triage area. Brown said 28 permanent full-time roles had been filled in the emergency department, including senior doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, and support staff. The emergency department expansion is part of the redevelopment of Nelson Hospital, with work also under way on a new 28-bed rapid-build inpatient ward.

Electricity networks merger
Network Tasman and Nelson Electricity have amalgamated, bringing the region’s two electricity distribution networks under one organisation. It follows Network Tasman’s 2025 acquisition of Marlborough Lines’ shareholding in Nelson Electricity. The merged entity will operate two service areas: the Tasman network, serving about 43,000 connections, and the Nelson network, serving about 10,000 connections. Each network will continue to receive dedicated service, with prices set to reflect the Commerce Commission’s revenue cap regulation and the distinct costs of each network. Gwenny Davis, chair of the Network Tasman Trust, said the merger strengthened the organisation’s long‐standing commitment to its communities. “This amalgamation improves our ability to deliver value to the people we serve while supporting our long‐term financial sustainability and future planning. The trust is confident this is the right step for the region.”

Bund under construction
Construction of a bund is under way following the removal of the final house affected by slips on Brook St in The Brook. Nelson City Council is undertaking the work, which is designed to capture future landslip debris and channel stormwater run-off flows from the hillside into the new network intakes. The work began with the decommissioning of the stormwater and sewer pipes that had serviced the houses that once lined the street. This included removal of infrastructure and vegetation. The council will also construct a new stormwater intake on Tantragee Rd at the entrance to Codgers Hub. Access from Brook St onto Tantragee Rd to Andrews Farm Reserve will be managed through traffic control. The Tantragee Walkway on Tantragee Rd is temporarily closed until further notice due to hazards from the bund construction. The works are scheduled to be completed by June 30.
