New editor takes the helm at the Nelson Mail
Sunday, 10 May 2026
Nelson Mail senior journalist Katie Townshend is stepping into a new role as acting editor, Stuff Masthead Publishing has announced.
The transition comes as the current editor, Warren Gamble, steps into a temporary role as a news director with the national regional team. Gamble will assist the team working across seven daily regional newspapers and their stories on press.co.nz and post.co.nz for the next five months.
Townshend is a familiar face in the Nelson newsroom, having served as the health and city council reporter for the past five years. During that time, she has also stepped into the role of editor on several occasions and has taken a leading hand in flood coverage and campaigns like Creating a Better Downtown which led to newspaper of the year nominations.
Before coming to the Nelson Mail, Townshend was a news director at the Dominion Post for several years and a reporter at the Manawatū Standard.
Townshend grew up in Blenheim, and said that gave her a strong understanding of the challenges facing Te Tauihu, while also appreciating what makes the region special.
“The top of the south is an amazing place to live and raise a family. But, like all regions it has its challenges.
“The Nelson Mail has an important role to play celebrating our successes, while also holding the powerful to account and asking the tough questions. I’m excited to lead our talented team and continue the great work we do every day.”
Group regional editor Victoria Guild said Townshend was a natural fit for the acting editor position.
'We are thrilled to have Katie take the reins. Her editorial instinct and experience in newsroom leadership roles make this a seamless transition.
“Warren is an exceptional editor and we are grateful he is able to assist in the regional news team for this five-month period.
“We look forward to continuing the strong local coverage the Nelson Mail is known for.”
Townshend begins her new role on May 18.
