Police have successfully shut down a planned anti-social road user gathering that moved across Canterbury last night, issuing around 50 infringements and impounding vehicles.

The group first gathered in a Rangiora commercial carpark before heading towards Swannanoa. But police were waiting.

“The plan was executed skilfully,” said Canterbury District Commander Superintendent Tony Hill. “The group was boxed in at the intersection, and every vehicle was checked by Police.”

Officers issued approximately 50 infringement notices and about 20 green and pink stickers - orders prohibiting vehicles from the road due to safety issues.

Several drivers had their licenses suspended after exceeding maximum demerit points, meaning they’re now prohibited from driving for three months.

Two vehicles were impounded for previous anti-social road user behaviour incidents.

When the group attempted to regroup in Kaiapoi, police were there to meet them. More green stickers were issued for vehicle condition breaches.

“Staff were one step ahead of the group every time, meaning they were never able to take hold of any one location,” Superintendent Hill said.

“Police are sending a message to anyone participating in this unlawful activity – we are ready and waiting, and you can expect us to take action anywhere, anytime.”
