A Waikato teenager has been charged with manslaughter over a crash that killed a former firefighter and hard-working Filipina mother.
Meriam Agot Agang was killed when a speeding BMW crashed into her vehicle in Waipā on Sunday, December 14 last year.
A 19-year-old, who also faces a charge of reckless driving causing injury, was granted interim name suppression when he made an initial appearance in the Hamilton District Court on Tuesday afternoon.
He was released on bail to next appear in the High Court in Hamilton on June 23.
The injuring charge is understood to involve one of Agang’s two children, who were in the car with her at the time of the crash.
At the time, police said officers had spotted a black BMW travelling in excess of the speed limit on Arapuni Rd and had turned around to stop the vehicle.
But moments later, the BMW collided with a second car containing Agang and her family.
Agang had left everything in the Philippines to get here, Cherry Tembor of Greenstone recruitment, who was Agang’s case manager, told Stuff.
Agang had retired from her life as a senior firefighter in the Philippines to work in New Zealand as a dairy farmer, hoping to give her two children a better life.
Tembor said Agang was extremely strong, patient and diligent.
“She's really a very good mother too, she takes care of her boys.
Agang’s firefighting colleagues at Panabo City Fire Station said her dedicated service and commitment “will be remembered with honour”.
“With profound sadness, we convey our deepest condolences to the family, relatives and loved ones of a former firefighter FO3 Meriam A Agang,” they said.
“May her soul rest in peace, and may her family be granted strength and comfort in this time of grief.”
