A huge backyard, eight bedrooms and shared costs - it’s all part of the package at this multi-generational home in Horsham Downs.

Having three generations under one roof might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but for Dylan Ross and his mum, Karen, it works great.

“My old man passed away when I was quite young and I ended up helping to raise my siblings. It was always just a goal of mine and mum’s to end up with something like this where everyone could come and go from a safety hub.

“With this type of living, you get the land, you get room for the animals and the kids, and you’ve got help when you need it from Mum, which is especially helpful if you have a young family.”

Ross lives with his mum, wife, Kim and their three kids at 18 Smith Rd, but after seven years, they have decided it’s time to sell. With his mum now 64, she’s ready to retire to the beach, but Ross needs to remain in Hamilton to run his plastering business, so they are going their separate ways.

The family bought the house in 2019, but it was built in 2014 by a family with a similar set-up to them.

“It took us forever to find this. We were looking for years for a dual property and then this just popped up pre-Covid, so we jumped on it … Everything we had looked at had one house that was too small. It would be like a 330sqm home with a 110sqm granny flat, and Mum was always like, ‘I’m not old enough to live in one of those’.”

The stand-out feature of the property is that it is a mirror house, where instead of an adjoining granny flat, the house is split into two equally large sides.

Sitting on about 1ha, the home spans 461sqm with each side split into about 230sqm. Each side of the house has four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a two-car garage. The master suites in each wing also come with a large walk-in wardrobe and are joined by a big communal living room with a covered decking area for entertaining.

The house was listed at the start of the year and is up for $2,189,000. Lodge real estate agent, Blair Pointon, said they had seen a “steady flow of inquiry” but, as it was an expensive and unique home, they were taking their time to find the right buyer.

As the house is under one title, the family split rates and purchased the property together. To avoid putting in a firewall, the second kitchen is without a full oven.

He said he had sold lots of multi-generational homes, but had never seen a mirror home and it could be good for families with someone who needed care as well as multi-generational families.

“It’s all one level and you’ve literally got two really nice homes, so nobody is compromising on size or quality.”

Alongside the house, there is a large shed and a big block of insulated dog kennels, where Ross kept his American bulldogs.

He said the family were sad to be leaving and this was his “haven”, but it was just time for a change.
