A Waikato teacher has appeared in court, facing two charges of committing an indecent act on two alleged victims.

The 44-year-old man entered the court from the courthouse cells on Thursday morning. Through his counsel Abby Brownlie, he entered pleas of not guilty to each of the charges.

The charges are representative, meaning they cover a number of separate alleged incidents.

Community magistrate Ngaire Mascelle granted a request by police prosecutors for his name and identifying details to be suppressed until his next appearance, which will be in November.

The man, who is identified as a teacher on police charging documents, was released on bail until that date. It is a condition of his bail that he not enter the grounds of any primary, intermediate or high school.

Police allege the offending happened “on diverse dates” between March and May this year.

The charge of doing an indecent act carries a maximum penalty of seven years in jail.
