A Waikato man has appeared in court, charged with stealing $425,863.73 from a sports-oriented organisation.

The man, who is known by many in the region, made his first appearance in the Hamilton District Court on Tuesday, on a single charge of theft.

However, he cannot be named. Judge Tini Clark granted him interim name suppression until his next appearance, which will be in July.

Likewise, the organisation he allegedly stole from also cannot be named - as this will lead to the defendant’s identification.

The police charging document alleges the offending happened between January 2013 and November 2025.

The man - who was represented in court by Ashleigh Beech, acting on behalf of Philip Morgan KC - was remanded on bail until his next appearance.

It is a condition of his bail that he not enter premises associated with his alleged victims, nor have any contact with anyone directly involved with that organisation.
