Temperatures plummet to -4.4C in Hamilton

MetService meteorologist Braydon White said it was colder then yesterday and was likely the coldest morning Hamilton had seen so far this year..

Residents across the region woke to another freezing start, with temperatures across Waikato plummeting well into the minuses overnight.

Hamilton Airport recorded temperatures of -4.4C, while Hamilton Central reached -4.1C and Te Aroha -2.8C.

MetService meteorologist Braydon White said it was colder then Monday and was likely the coldest morning Hamilton had seen so far this year.

Cars were being watered across the city on Tuesday.

“We often see these coldest temperatures of the winter on mornings like this where you've had an outbreak of quite cold air, and then the high comes over and just everything calms down and that really allows that temperature to plummet.”

There’s relief coming for those who’ve had enough of the frosty temperatures, with warmer weather expected later this week.

“We do have a bit of a front approaching the west of the country sort of from later [Wednesday] and into Thursday,” White said.

“That’s going to bring some of that cloud and stronger winds back with a bit of rain, especially for western areas, and so we're going see some warmer temperatures.”

Metservice was forecasting Hamilton to reach mid-teens highs on Thursday and Friday as the weather warmed up.
