Dash cam footage captures car narrowly miss oncoming truck in West Auckland

Monday, 19 November 2018

Mike Cains has laid a complaint with police after witnessing a near miss on a blind corner.

Dash cam footage has captured a 'ridiculous' driving manouevre which saw a car narrowly miss a truck in Auckland.

Mike Cains was a passenger in the car on Monday morning when another car overtook the one he was travelling in on a blind corner, narrowly missing an oncoming truck.

Cains said the incident happened near the Lower Nihotupu Dam in West Auckland, a 'regular overtaking spot'.

'The first thing I saw was the car right next to us as we were going across the bridge and then it was a blind corner and the truck [was] coming down the hill,' Cains said.

'He noticed and started flashing his lights.'

Cains said the incident happened so quickly he didn't have time to think about what was happening.

However, he said it did make him think about what action he would have to take to avoid being involved in a head-on collision in future.

'It was quite ridiculous to be honest because he wasn't even behind us.

'He had actually overtaken another car coming up the hill and pulled in, and then decided to go around us at the blind corner.'

Cains said he had laid a complaint to police about the incident online.

He had seen a 'handful' of close calls but he saw poor driving in the area almost every day.

Cains said he was overtaken in the area most mornings, at or even above the speed limit of 70 kilometres per hour.

Waitemata district road policing manager, Trevor Beggs, said police were 'alarmed' by the video which showed 'reckless and extremely dangerous' driving behaviour.

Briggs said officers would be following up the incident and making inquiries with the registered owner.

'Motorists should only overtake when it is safe to do so and the road ahead is clear with reasonable space to pass.

'Behaviour like this puts the driver, as well as other motorists on the road, in danger of being seriously injured in an accident or worse.'

Beggs said anyone who saw dangerous driving should call *555 or make a complaint at their local police station.
